exchange money in Myanmar (as of April, 2006) |
Now there is no more compulsory exchange of US$200 into FEC 200 upon arrival
at Yangon airport. Foreign Exchange Certificates (FECs) are issued by the Central Bank of Myanmar to use during their stay in Myanmar. FECs are acceptable like US dollars by any person in Myanmar. It is printed on the note as 1 FEC equal to 1 USD. By the way, when you exchange from US dollar to Myanmar kyat (local currency), current market price is quite difference from official exchange rate. You can exchange money at hotels, guest houses and moneychangers in the city; however, moneychangers DON'T display the signboard, you should be taken to their shop by experienced tourists at first. According to Travel Myanmar.com, Euro and other currencies are difficult to use in Myanmar. Credit cards, travelers checks and ATM cards are almost never accepted. In fact I didn't find a place where these items are accepted. So, it's advisable that you should bring enough money in US dollar cash. |
