Toledo can be reached from Madrid
by bus or train.
If you would like to go to Toledo by bus,
you should take metro line No.6 and go to
Méndez Alvaro of closest station of
Madrid South Bus Station (Estación
Sur de autobuses).
In case of by train, it's OK to go to Atocha
station.
I suggest you go there by bus rather than
train.
According to the guidebook, you are likely
to have a lot of trouble with getting to
old town from railway station if you do by
train.
However, if you are tired or pressed for
time, you might book a local guided tour
like us.
When you come to Madrid by night train, even
more so.
Therefore there is an announcement about
next station in Spanish in the metro.
It is announced by machine talking, for example,
"¿Dónde está la
siguiente estación? (Where is a next
station?)" at first and then "Gran
Vía."
Hence, unless you miss hearing the station's
name, it's no problem.
Finally, when you buy the metro ticket, you
should choose coupon ticket as already stated.

It is very convenient that departure
terminal of tours of Julia Tours is along
the Gran Vía.
Julia Tours operated a tour of Toledo twice
or three times a day: half-day in the morning
(leaving at 8:30 between April and October),
half-day in the afternoon (leaving at 15:00)
and full day (leaving at 9:30 and lunch included).
Since we booked tour of hald-day in the afternoon,
it was fit to dissolve lack of sleep these
days.
It is said that the highlight
of Toledo is The Cathedral and St. Tomé
Church.
Of course we also visited these tourist attractions,
but we had time to see them for only about
1 hour.
Hence, if you behold the old town of Toledo,
you might come here by independent trip.
Therefore this tour spared the time to go
and back for 3 hours and shopping in the
souvenir shops for 1 hour.
Anyway, I thought it is important that we
make good use of package tour too when our
trip is nearing an end.
If anybody is sick in bed, they will lose
their shirt, right?

In Tokyo, McDonald's usually open at 7 in the morning, it seems
to do at noon in Madrid on the other hand.
Instead, beer is not sold in Tokyo, but sold
in Madrid.
Which one do you like?
Therefore both of one's staff can hardly
speak English.
But it is best way to learn the local language
by eating and bedwork, right?
You may make a tour of Palacio Real (Royal Palace) by English or Spanish guided tour (duration:
about 40 minutes).
Since here is one of the tourist attraction
of Madrid and it is worth seeing that are
luxurious interior decorations with some
sculpture and ornamental article, you might
come here by fair means or foul.
Of course don't miss Prado Museum (Museo del Prado)!
As the end of our trip approached,
we worried what souvenir we should buy.
Gran Vía is biggest shopping mall in Madrid, and
besides, there was big department store then.
These were El Corte Inglés and Galerías
Preciados.
But both parties hardly understood English,
I had trouble in shopping.
By the way, if you would like to be looking
for a public toilet anywhere, you might learn
Spanish word "cervicios (means toilet)"
at least because the locals can hardly speak
English.

If you would like to see a Flamenco
Show, you might ask a staff of lodging or
tourist information to book one.
But in case of staying budget hotels, you
might think most of staff can hardly speak
English.
If you try to ask them about Flamenco Show
in Spanish, for example, it's OK to say the
following;
"Quisiera ver una obra de flamenco.
(I'd like to see a Flamenco Show.)"
"¿Dónde eatá tablao
más cercano? (Where is the nearest
tablao near here?)"
"¿Puede usted reservarme Torres
Bermejas? (Could you reserve Torres Bermejas?)"
Well, if they understand "tablao"
and "reserva (means reserve)" that
you say, you may somehow make a reservation.
All right, let's try anything!
By the way, you may go back by taxi or foot.
If you take the metro, you are obliged to
leave in the middle of the show, right?

At last it seems that the day
when we return to Japan came on.
I felt lonely somehow as I thought our pleasant
trip come to an end at any moment.
In the plane is almost empty unlike coming
to Madrid.
When it became like this, I was glad that
I could lie on a row of the seats.
It seemed that the flights for Japan get
uncrowded when September comes the same as
last year.
Well, it was lucky for us, right?
After about 6 years, November 30 1998 |
Iberia Airlines of Spain pulled out of Japan. For one thing, it was said that their route for Japan is likely to be unpayable because of losing competitiveness. And it was said that Japanese passengers had reached a plateau, however, I thought 16 hours flight caused to lose competitiveness. |
