My Advice
  • US dollars are generally accepted in Lao major cities. It is advisable to exchange money because local currency, kip is unexpectedly available and the dollar keeps weakening than before.

Asia Miles AwardI'm Asia Mile's member since November 2003. So I redeemed miles on award tickets because of a part of mileage credits would expire in this November. I could redeem mileage credits by 35,000 miles, I was planning to fly to Hanoi.
I heard Pakse based my friend, hideya would come back to Japan in this March, I probably go there final.
Fortunately, Indochina countries can be flown at a low price by Discovery Air Pass, of course, I obtained it.

In CX 509 to Hong Kong, I chatted with Kiyoe who treks around the world, and Eriko who is Kiyoe's traveling companion.
I met them first time and asked where they were going, and then they answered going to Macau for sightseeing. "After coming back from Macau, I'm planning to go to Chirripo in Costa Rica" added Kiyoe.
She is energetic traveler and I had a good time in flight. Unfortunately, my destination was neither Hong Kong nor Macau.

I arrived Vientiane via Hong Kong and Hanoi.
I didn't need to obtain a tourist visa because Laos exempts Japanese from visa requirements for short-term stays since January 1th, 2007.
Meanwhile, Vietnamese officials in Hanoi asked me about Lao visa, I answered "visa on arrival" to her question.
Because I thought that she didn't understand new Lao visa requirement for Japanese.

I arrived the hotel, and then I went to one of Mekong riverside restaurants in spite of after dark.
The restaurant's master can speak Japanese as well as English, I ordered Beer Lao, pingkai (grilled chicken) and fried rice, which cost me only 41,0000K (approximately US$4.5).
So he suggested eating hot pot to me as well as my neighbors, I regreted ordering fried rice because of look delicious.

My Advice
  • Wat Phu festival is annually held in Champasak from February 5 to 8. When planning a visit to Champasak during this time, you need to make room reservations ahead of time. Room rates range from US$2 to 10.
  • You can find the information of English spoken tuktuk drivers at Delta Cafe on the opposite of Chamapasak Palace Hotel. If you would like to hire the tuktuk, you should call him and negotiate price. I heard that the hire through the travel agent is from US$50 to US$60.
  • If you use local buses, making a day trip from Pakse is almost impossible.
