*=As of March 2001, Alishan Railway Station hasn't been used owing to Taiwan Earthquake of September 1999; hence, all train have arrived and departed at Jauping Station. To get to Alishan from Jauping takes half an hour on foot, or hotel omnibus may take you to Alishan. |

Alishan Forest Railway | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
It is said that the Alishan Forest Railway
is one of the only three steep-gradient alpine
railways in the world, the others being from
Darjeeling in India into the Himalayas and from Chile through the Andes to Argentina. I think it is worth your while to take its train at least one way; however, it is quite difficult for non-Taiwanese independent travelers to get a ticket because the train usually goes and returns once a day, and has reserved seats only. In addition, "its ticket would be available at Chia Yi Station from three days before your riding onward," said a staff of Tourism Bureau of Republic of China. Hence, I recommend you to reserve a package tour of Alishan through any travel agencies; for example, Dancing Elephant (Jishianq) Travel Service, Edison Travel Service, Golden Foundation Tours, Trump Travel Service, and see also here. |
